Welcome back to In Session, your backstage pass to the world of Wavezoo DJs! This time, on the ones and twos, we have the dynamic DJ DMJAY, a master of open format sets who electrifies crowds at all kinds of events.
Hold on tight as we dive into DMJAY’s musical journey, someone who was “lucky enough to be born and still live the best decade for musical culture”, the wellspring of inspiration behind the mixes, and his vision for the future of DJing.
1. How did you start DJing? Tell us about your origins
I think a lot of DJs have similar stories. It all began by listening to the radio, soaking up different styles of music. I bought vinyl records, recorded mixes on cassette tapes, and created my first mixtapes.
Then, I started playing at small parties, like school events.
2. Who would you say are your influences?
My influences are the musical styles I’ve absorbed throughout my life, both from actively listening and researching different genres. But Black music is truly at the core of everything I do. From disco, funk, and soul to R&B, rap, hip hop, samba, and bossa nova – the list goes on.
Then came house music, which felt like a natural evolution of disco for me. In my productions, I like to weave through all these different decades, always leaving a classic touch.
3. What do you think about the future of DJing? Where we are headed?
There’s a trend towards automation in many creative and operational processes. This includes using technology to read physical and emotional responses from the audience.
We’re already seeing big steps in this direction, like wristbands that track people’s reactions. However, these technologies are still under development.
A big part of being a DJ is reading the energy of the crowd and understanding their emotions in the moment. Music isn’t math; it’s about feeling. The key is knowing how to manipulate those emotions at just the right time. This requires preparation and understanding the audience, regardless of the venue, time, or occasion.
4. What can people expect from your shows?
I believe my spontaneous and energetic style sets me apart. However, it also depends on the event and the audience. I know I’m not a good fit for every venue, but luckily, I connect well with many crowds.
My goal is always to deliver an emotional experience. Music is for enjoyment, singing along, and of course, dancing! Ideally, I take people on a real journey through time.
5. What would be your ideal party? Let people know what would be your top tracks
There’s no magic formula for a perfect party. I don’t have a set playlist. I try to play what the audience wants to hear, focusing on genres I’m familiar with, but I’m always open to exploring new things.
However, there is one thing: I won’t play at an event where I don’t feel like a good fit. This way, I avoid frustration for myself and disappointment for the organizer.
6. Help other DJs to level up, give the community a tip that will improve other DJs performance
My one piece of advice would be this: Seek out new music, research different styles, participate in the DJ community, observe other DJs, and try to learn from them. Then, take that knowledge and experiment to find your own unique style. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Mistakes are part of the learning process, no matter what you’re trying to achieve.
7. Let the people know what is going on in your life
Right now, I’m focusing on my own project called “Domingueira DMJay,” which takes place on Sunday afternoons. It’s all about bringing back the vibe of 80s street parties.
I’m really excited about the Wavezoo platform. Their focus on aligning itself with professional DJs, continually adding talented artists to the roster, and reinforcing positive trends in the industry is exactly what the DJ world needs. With a solid, organized, and scalable structure, Wavezoo strikes me as a platform that will be incredibly useful for DJs, event organizers, and the entire event chain. It feels like a win-win for everyone involved.
