Here is our ninth interview for the In Session series, a space where we get to know more about Wavezoo DJs. On this occasion we have talked to DJ NDG (iN Da Gruv), a professional and meticulous DJ from Dallas. Almost 40 years mastering the turntables.
1. How did you start DJing? Tell us about your origins
Being born in ‘72 and heavily influenced in music because of my father and his band, the 70s, 80s, 90s…, music, breakdancing, the original hip-hop movement, the MTV ERA, and falling in love with 2 Live Crew and the baddest DJ Mr. Mixx. I tried to copy everything that he was doing, but at the time didn’t have the right equipment and/or the skills for that matter
I stayed practicing and got pretty good at DJing.I began scratching for the first time off of a 2 Live Crew album I had bought on my grandparents combo record, cassette, 8-track player, radio, bar combo with the disco lights on the outside. Ripped up the sleeve and cut it into a circle, placed it on the rubber mat of the record player, put a quarter on top of the needle, placed the record down, the needle on top, and started scratching!
I was more than blown away at me being able to do that. The rest is still history in the making.
2. Who would you say are your influences?
My Father, 2 Live Crew, DJ Mr. Mixx, and the one and only original ISP (Invisibl Skratch Piklz), including who is for me the best DJ in the world: DJ QBert.
3. What do you think about the future of DJing? Where we are headed?
I wish that we had a combination of todays tech with what we actually started out with in the mid-80s. For me personally, like for instance being able to have the key lock feature in the Technics 1210s that I had and used for almost 3 decades to at least not have the “chipmunks” sound coming out of certain songs when mixing.
Among other things, like not having to tote around all of them heavy crates of music, which today with streaming you don’t even need any drives. But all-in-all, I’m very excited about the direction it’s going in and with what tech.
4. What can people expect from your shows?
I’m a very professional, no-excuses, punctual, no alcohol/illegal drugs abuse or usage, very knowledgable in various types of genres in music, don’t mind taking special requests of any kind DJ and I will definitely make it enjoyable for everyone.
I’m blessed to had been born at the right time for being able to be influenced by so much musical talent from all sides and to being able to own and play with such great and reliable professional DJ products especially my one and only 4-set of Chromed-out TECHNICS 1210s straight from Japan circa 1988.
5. What would be your ideal party? Let people know what would be your top tracks
I love to get hyped up and krunk so I’ll be spinnin’ some Lil Jon and local Dallas talent like DSR to get the party started and lit, along with todays latest and hottest tracks or whatever playlist(s) the client wants.
6. Help other DJs to level up, give the community a tip that will improve other DJs performance
I like to be direct and upfront, no holds barred, and I love to teach and educate and help when I can to my fellow DJs. I am always double and triple-checking all of my dj equipment and music to insure that nothing will go wrong or at the very least keep it to a small minimum.
Also, I love having at least two different camera angles and running my synchronized light show with my SoundSwitch Control One DMX controller and just making it a party atmosphere.
7. Let the people know what is going on in your life
I’m actually getting my equipment decked out and tricked out to give it my personality and not keeping it stock lookin’ and I am adding more equipment and planning on adding more sound with more speakers, both subs and full range tops along with an led DJ facade with various features to interact with the crowd.
If possible, to also play with my synchronized SoundSwitch light shows also at a later time, an interactive LED dance floor all working in concert with each other while I provide the tunes.
