Choosing a DJ name is one of the first and most important decisions you will have to make.
A good DJ name will make people take you more seriously as an artist right from the start, but it can also have the opposite effect and present you as amateurish and unprofessional.
Pay attention to what will be one of your main identifiers. We can’t invent a name for you, but we can give you a series of fundamental tips to help you choose your most suitable stage name.
5 Tips for choosing DJ names
These tips are intended for those of you who want to become professional DJ’s, but they will also be equally useful for other types of artists such as producers, solo singers etc.
Choose a name that people can pronounce
It seems like a very obvious thing, but it is not, we constantly see names of DJs or other artists that we do not know how to pronounce correctly.
Especially keep in mind that we live in a globalized world, and that a name that can be easily understood in your country may not be so easily understood internationally.
Check availability and register your name on the web and social media
Before making a final decision, check the availability of your artistic name on social media. This will also help you to check that there is no other artist who already uses your DJ name and is more recognized than you.
Keep in mind what your stage name logo will look like
The logo is almost as important as the name. It’s what’s going to go on different marketing materials like your Wavezoo Profile, websites and so on. Having a logo that is appropriate, clear and stands out, is extremely important when you’re going to be on billboards competing for attention.

You don’t need to come up with something completely unique
Nowadays it’s rare that something hasn’t already been invented. Just check that there is no other recognized DJ with the same name (which would complicate your identity) but don’t expect anyone in the world to have used the chosen word before.
Things NOT to do when creating DJ names
After you have checked that the name you have in your head meets the five requirements recommended above, also make sure it doesn’t fall into any of the following mistakes:
- Don’t use the word “DJ” in your name, it’s a thing of the past. The ultimate goal of your career is to be recognized for music you have created and when this happens, it is in your best interest to project an image as a global artist, not just a DJ.
- Don’t use a name that is associated with a genre or trend: Genres evolve and trends die. So don’t name yourself “The Dubstep Wizard” or something similar. Even though there are genres that last for decades, your tastes may change or evolve over time, so choose a name that can sustain your entire career, not just a few seasons.
Choosing a good DJ name takes some effort and time. Don’t settle for the first thing that pops into your head (this might work too, but it’s not the norm). Here are a few ideas for a DJ name.
Finding the name and creating the perfect identity may take a few weeks, or even months, but in the end a name is something that will accompany you throughout your career. It is a fundamental part of any DJ’s marketing and it is important that you give it the attention it deserves from the start of your DJ career.
